Training for Tough Mudder this summer provided the opportunity to explore a couple of the GPS technologies and their respective online tools.
Here's a few of commutes and runs I've recorded as part of Mudder training. To prepare for this 12 mile obstacle course, I worked my exercise into my commute by walking, cycling and running to get to and from work.
The Strava GPS app gives great data and reports on rides and runs.
The website does a nice job presenting the data. "Achievements"
(personal best, your # out of the total people who have ridden that
segment, etc) are awarded for faster times - making the app very
sticky. You want to beat times and get achievements, right?
Not
so fast - use this app with caution. If you allow yourself to get
excited about beating your previous best time (or someone else's), you
are almost asking for injuries to yourself and others.
Remember, this is a 40 year old man's get-your-stuff-moving data. Donate to the Wounded Warrior Project- these guys provide replacement arms & legs to veterans. They gave their hearts and limbs - the least we can do is replace their limbs.
p.s. Remember to wear your dang ole helmet.
Garmin has similar features to Strava and is very customizable
I did something like this several days this summer. Walk to the train and to work. And return by way of ferry and a 5 mile run home. This particular map includes a stop by the local college's restroom for an emergency bathroom break. That was not a fun run.
This one's just a Saturday fun ride through SF.
